THE TABLE CLOTH THAT MADE IT TO THE MOON
What would you get if you fold a table cloth 50 times over itself? Would it be more like a phone book, or would it be a stack high enough to reach the moon?
I suspect your answer would fall in line with most people's answer to this mental exercise* and would pick the phone book. However, with an aid of a simple calculator, the answer is more like a stack high enough to reach the moon.
And this surprise difference in answer points to how we view change through our innate gradualist thinking, our expectations set by the steady passage of time. But in reality, change is much faster, requiring a lot more frugal actions than we imagine. In the right context, as the right contagion, in the right environment, it only requires a little infection to turn into a full blown influenza.
Illustrating this, social studies
have shown that if a community comprises of 40% to 5.6% of the population working in a high status job (professionals, managers, teachers), the rate of teenage pregnancy and high school drop out are no different.
However, if this high status worker rate drops from 5.6% to 3.4%, the teenage pregnancy and high school dropout nearly doubles.
This goes to show little causes can have big effects. And when we view change, not from the gradualist thinking that was behind our phone book answer, we truly can see the real power we have in bringing planetary change. Thus, we no longer feel the hopelessness that mires us in inaction.
* This is more of a mental exercise than a practical one because the increasing resistance from it's folded seam, with each and every fold, would make it near impossible to fold the last few foldings, requiring a prerequisite cutting the folds that is unmanly in time preoccupation.
VIDEO OF A POSITIVE INFLUENZA
Here is an animated video that shows how Scales Exercise is able to bring widespread change to our community (MI shown), not in a gradualist fashion, but in the accelerated rate that is behind the table cloth reaching the moon.
What you will see in this 40 second video is how the Scales Exercise can bring big effects with little causes. The pinheads have different colors, the Grey are those individuals whose relationship with participants have shifted (such as Leah's ex-husband), and the Red are participants who have reached level 3 (such as Leah).
Also, in one of the stills, you would also see quote boxes in white. These are comments from actual participants.
The plan is to map all participants and their relationships that have shifted by zip code. And with technology permitting, a cursor over the non grey pin head will flash how many they have touched. And by further clicking, you can see their actual written and sometimes video testimonials.
And with this mapping, we can see not only we are interconnected with each other, but how fast the train of transformation is taking effect with little frugal actions.
And these pin heads act as permission givers to bring more into it. After all, it only takes one person to jaywalk before the entourage follows.
